The Lifesaving 1 certification aims to provide preliminary skills and knowledge in water safety and land-based non-contact rescues.
Candidates are required to wear appropriate swimwear during the Lifesaving 1 examination to ensure they are properly equipped. The theory test for the Lifesaving 1 examination covers four main topics. The practical test for the Lifesaving 1 certification assesses a range of skills. Candidates must swim a specific distance during the Lifesaving 1 practical examination.
Examiner Requirements
- SLSS Lifesaving Examiner: One examiner for up to 10 candidates.
- Self-Assessment: May be self-assessed by an instructor if appointed by SLSS.
Pre-requisites
- Instructor Assessment: Item 8 of the award conditions must be assessed by the instructor before the date of the examination.

- Casualty Simulation
- Demonstrate the actions of a casualty in the water who is:
- A non-swimmer
- A weak swimmer
- Demonstrate the actions of a casualty in the water who is:
- Reach Rescue
- Rescue a casualty in deep water (1 to 2 meters away) using a suitable reaching aid.
- Encourage the casualty to use the aid and return to safety.
- Assist the casualty in climbing out of the water.
- Throw Rescue with Buoyant Aid
- Rescue a casualty in deep water (5 meters away) using a suitable buoyant aid.
- Encourage the casualty to use the aid and return to safety.
- Assist the casualty in climbing out of the water.
- Wade Rescue with Buoyant or Rigid Aid
- Enter shallow water with a suitable aid and perform a wading rescue of a casualty 10 to 12 meters away.
- Encourage the casualty to use the aid and return to safety.
- Assist the casualty from the water and then climb out.
- Accompanied Rescue
- With a suitable buoyant aid, enter shallow water and approach a casualty in deep water 25 meters away.
- Encourage the casualty to use the aid and maintain a safe distance while accompanying the casualty 25 meters to safety.
- Assist the casualty from the water and then climb out.
- Initiative Rescue
- Demonstrate the ability to rescue a casualty in deep water using reaching or throwing skills in a previously unknown situation.
- After the rescue, explain the reasons for your actions.
- Swim Test
- Demonstrate the ability to swim 100 meters in any recognized stroke.
