A Major Milestone in Aquatic Safety

SwimSafer Stage 4 Bronze — also written as Swim Safer Bronze — is the fourth level in the Singapore MOE/CAMS SwimSafer 2.0 programme. It marks the transition from basic proficiency to genuine deep-water competence.

Participants develop coordinated breathing across four strokes, learn throw-rescue techniques, and demonstrate survival swimming while fully clothed — preparing them for real-world emergencies such as flash floods or accidental falls into deep water.

At AQZOG Swim School, our experienced coaches have guided thousands of children and adults through this milestone since 2007. We align every lesson with the latest SwimSafer 2.0 requirements so your child is test-ready and genuinely safe.

SwimSafer Stage 4 Bronze — Full Requirements

There are four assessed components. All practical sequences are performed without goggles.

Front Crawl — 25 m25%
Backstroke — 25 m25%
Breaststroke — 25 m25%
Survival Backstroke — 25 m25%

Component 1 — Continuous 100 m Swim

  1. 25 m Front Crawl
  2. 25 m Backstroke
  3. 25 m Breaststroke
  4. 25 m Survival Backstroke

Performed consecutively without stopping, demonstrating coordinated breathing in deep water.

Component 2 — Survival Sequence A (No Goggles)

  1. Compact jump entry in deep water, then resurface
  2. Perform a forward somersault
  3. Scull, float or tread water for 2 minutes
  4. Feet-first surface dive in ≥ 1.4 m deep water
  5. Swim through hoops on pool bottom for 2 m
  6. Resurface and exit the pool safely

Component 3 — Survival Sequence B (Clothed)

Dressed in swimwear, shorts and T-shirt:

  1. Swim slowly for 3 minutes using survival backstroke, sidestroke and survival breaststroke — change stroke every 15 m
  2. Wave for help (rescuer throws a flotation aid)
  3. Swim to the flotation aid and kick to the pool edge
  4. Climb out of the water safely

Component 4 — SwimSafer Theory Online Quiz

Complete the official SwimSafer Theory online quiz before the practical test. You must achieve at least 80% to pass. Model answers are available from AQZOG — ask your coach.

Survival Sequences A & B Explained

These are the elements most students find challenging — here is exactly what each step involves.

Sequence A — Without Goggles · Deep Water
1
Compact Jump Entry Enter deep water using a compact (tuck) jump, keep knees bent on impact to minimise depth, then resurface quickly.
2
Forward Somersault Tuck chin to chest and rotate forward fully. This is one of the most commonly failed elements — practise until it is smooth.
3
2-Minute Tread / Scull / Float Conserve energy. Eggbeater kick or scissors kick. Keep chin above the waterline — no goggles allowed.
4
Feet-First Surface Dive At ≥ 1.4 m depth, push down feet-first, then tuck and orient horizontally to pass through the pool hoops.
5
2 m Underwater Swim Navigate through hoops on the pool bottom — keep eyes open in the water (no goggles).
6
Resurface & Safe Exit Surface smoothly and exit using the pool ladder or deck — no pulling on lane ropes.
Sequence B — Clothed Survival
1
Clothed Entry & 3-Minute Survival Swim Dressed in swimwear + shorts + T-shirt, swim slowly for 3 minutes alternating survival backstroke, sidestroke and survival breaststroke — switch stroke every 15 m.
2
Signal for Help Wave clearly and call out to indicate distress. The assessor (acting as rescuer) then throws a flotation aid into the water.
3
Retrieve Flotation Aid Swim to the thrown flotation aid, secure it, and kick to the pool edge — demonstrating real-world throw-rescue technique as the assisted person.
4
Safe Exit Climb out of the pool safely while still in wet clothing — a surprisingly demanding finish that tests core strength and technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most challenging part of SwimSafer Stage 4 Bronze?
The three most commonly failed elements are the forward somersault (many children panic mid-rotation), treading water for 2 continuous minutes without goggles, and executing a correct sidestroke. AQZOG dedicates focused sessions to each of these before test day.
What are the most common mistakes at this stage?
Assessors frequently flag: uneven breaststroke kicks, backstroke with a poor kick and sunken hips, an incorrect sidestroke (arm and leg coordination errors), and failing to stay horizontal during the underwater hoop swim. Our coaches drill these specific points in every class.
What are the survival strokes in Stage 4 Bronze?
Stage 4 introduces three core survival strokes: survival backstroke, survival sidestroke and survival breaststroke. They share three key features: a horizontal body position, the head above water without goggles and similar whip or scissor kick patterns. Mastering one makes the others easier to learn.
Can a competitive swimmer skip straight to Stage 4 Bronze?
Not automatically. Strong competitive swimmers may be fast but often lack the survival components: treading water, the backward/forward somersault, sidestroke, and clothed swimming. AQZOG offers a skill assessment to identify gaps and recommend the fastest route to certification.
Do I need to bring extra clothing to the Stage 4 Bronze test?
Yes — bring an extra T-shirt and extra shorts. Survival Sequence B is performed in swimwear, shorts and a T-shirt to simulate a real-world emergency scenario. Forgetting these items may result in a failed attempt.
How long does it take to prepare for Stage 4 Bronze?
This depends on the swimmer’s current level. A child who has recently cleared Stage 3 typically needs 6–12 weeks of weekly lessons or one of AQZOG’s popular 6-day Holiday SwimSafer Programmes to be test-ready. Our coaches will advise after an assessment.
What comes after SwimSafer Stage 4 Bronze?
Stage 5 Silver and Stage 6 Gold. Stage 6 Gold is required by many MOE schools and CCAs, and is essential for activities such as kayaking, sailing and dragon boat. AQZOG trains students through all six stages.
Is there a minimum age for SwimSafer Stage 4 Bronze?
There is no fixed age requirement — progression is based on ability, not age. Most children attempt Stage 4 between 8 and 12 years old, but adults at any age are welcome.
