What is SwimSafer Stage 6 Gold?

SwimSafer Stage 6 (Gold) is the final and most demanding stage of the SwimSafer 2.0 syllabus. As of November 2024, a standing dive entry can be used as part of the front crawl and breaststroke swims. Participants earn their Gold e-certificate via the CAMS platform after passing the timed swims, the Gold survival sequence and the online theory quiz.

Stage 6 Gold test criteria: what’s assessed

Gold is performed entirely without goggles, wearing swimwear, long pants and a t-shirt, and includes the programme’s only self-made flotation device task.

Gold Sequence (without goggles, clothed)
  • Compact jump entry. Enter deep water using a compact jump.
  • Head-first surface dive. Dive to a depth of at least 1.8 metres, equalising ear pressure if needed.
  • Underwater swim. Swim through hoops on the pool bottom for 5 metres and resurface.
  • Quick front crawl. Swim 45 metres quickly using front crawl.
  • Survival swim. Swim a further 50 metres slowly using any preferred survival stroke, keeping your face clear of the water.
  • Remove pants & float. In deep water, remove your pants and make a float with them while treading water, within 5 minutes.
  • H.E.L.P. technique. Demonstrate the Heat Escape Lessening Posture for 1 minute using your self-made float.
  • Swim with float. Swim 25 metres using the self-made float.
  • Exit the water. Climb out of the water.
