Important things to take note for Backward Somersault
What is the Sagittal Plane for a Backward Somersault?

The sagittal plane is an imaginary vertical plane that divides the body into left and right halves (Highlighted in Blue).
In simple terms
- Imagine a straight line running from your head down to your feet, splitting your body into left side and right side.
- Any movement where you go forward or backward happens in the sagittal plane.
How this applies to a backward somersault in swimming
When performing a backward somersault from a vertical or back float position:
- β Rotation is backward, not sideways
- β The head, shoulders, hips, and knees stay aligned
- β The body moves like a wheel turning straight back
This means:
The entire somersault should rotate within the sagittal plane, without twisting or drifting sideways.
Why maintaining the sagittal plane is important
If the swimmer:
- β Drifts left or right β rotation shifts into the frontal plane
- β Twists the body β rotation enters the transverse plane
This can cause:
- Loss of balance
- Incomplete rotation
- Poor finishing position (not upright)
Coaching cue (easy to remember)
π£οΈ βRoll straight back like a wheel, not like a corkscrew.β
This cue helps swimmers:
- Keep rotation clean
- Finish upright
- Maintain good control underwater
Summary
- Sagittal plane = divides the body into left and right
- Backward somersault = must rotate entirely in the sagittal plane
- Staying in this plane ensures smooth, controlled, and safe rotation
