Swimsafer stage 3

New changes in Swimsafer Stage 3 in JULY 2025!!

When your child learning the swimming skills at Swimsafer stage 3, more or less he knows at least 2 strokes on front and at least 1 stroke on back. All the training will be done at the deep pool (Competition Pool) and they no longer do swimming at the training pool unless strokes corrections or when there is a needs to do at training pool or playing water games.

In Swimsafer stage 3, he is also more accustomed to not wearing goggle and keeping eye open while in the water. The percentage of the chart are just an estimate. We calculated base on ratio.

Arriving at Swimsafer Stage 3 after clearing swimsafer stage 2, the skills taught in this level is on strokes technique with some stamina for a 25 meters backstroke and 20 meters freestyle (Front crawl). The reason we started them on backstroke first was more for safety reason. We do not want the child to knock their head on the wall on their first attempt in the big pool. Below are some of the detailed planned that are required to pass Swimsafer Stage 3.

SwimSafer Stage 3 in Singapore – Complete Guide by AQZOG Swim School

If your child has completed basic water confidence and is ready to swim independently over longer distances, SwimSafer Stage 3 is the most critical milestone in their swimming journey. At AQZOG Swim School, we specialise in preparing students to pass SwimSafer Stage 3 confidently, safely, and correctly, not just for assessment, but for real-life water survival.

This page is your complete, in-depth guide to SwimSafer Stage 3 in Singapore, covering skills, expectations, common mistakes, assessment format, and how AQZOG helps students succeed.

What Is SwimSafer Stage 3?

SwimSafer Stage 3 is part of Singapore’s national SwimSafer Programme, jointly supported by Sport Singapore, MOE, and ActiveSG. It represents the transition stage from beginner swimming to competent, independent swimming.

At Stage 3, students are expected to:

  • Swim longer distances without assistance
  • Demonstrate controlled breathing and body position
  • Perform survival and rescue-related skills
  • Show confidence in deeper water

This stage is often where many children struggle or fail if fundamentals are weak — which is why structured coaching matters.

Why SwimSafer Stage 3 Is a Make-or-Break Stage

Unlike Stages 1 and 2, Stage 3 introduces:

  • Increased distance requirements
  • Higher technical accuracy
  • Stricter assessment standards
  • Greater emphasis on survival skills

Many parents are surprised when children who “can swim” still fail Stage 3. This is because Stage 3 is not just about moving forward — it is about control, efficiency, and safety awareness.

At AQZOG Swim School, we treat Stage 3 as the foundation for lifelong swimming and water survival, not merely a certificate.

SwimSafer Stage 3 Skills Breakdown

1. Freestyle (Front Crawl)

Students must demonstrate:

  • Proper body alignment
  • Continuous flutter kick
  • Side breathing with minimal head lift
  • Streamlined arm recovery

Common failure point: poor breathing timing and sinking hips.

2. Backstroke

Requirements include:

  • Stable supine position
  • Alternating arm action
  • Consistent kick
  • Straight swimming direction

Common failure point: bending knees excessively or drifting off line.

3. Breaststroke

Stage 3 breaststroke focuses on:

  • Correct kick (not frog splash)
  • Glide phase
  • Coordinated arm-leg timing

Common failure point: lack of glide and incorrect kick recovery.

4. Survival Backstroke

This is a key survival skill:

  • Relaxed floating position
  • Energy-efficient propulsion
  • Ability to rest while moving

AQZOG places strong emphasis here because it is directly applicable to real-life emergencies.

5. Treading Water

Students must:

  • Maintain vertical position
  • Use eggbeater or sculling techniques
  • Remain calm and controlled

This skill tests true water confidence, not strength alone.

6. Basic Water Safety Knowledge

Students are assessed on:

  • Pool safety rules
  • Emergency awareness
  • Safe behaviour around water

SwimSafer Stage 3 Assessment Format (Singapore)

The assessment is conducted by certified assessors under Sport Singapore guidelines and includes:

  • Continuous swimming tests
  • Skill-specific demonstrations
  • Observation of confidence and control

There is no partial pass — every required skill must meet the standard.

Why Students Fail SwimSafer Stage 3

From over a decade of coaching experience, AQZOG has identified the top reasons:

  1. Weak breathing technique
  2. Poor body balance
  3. Inconsistent kicking
  4. Panic during assessment
  5. Lack of survival skills practice
  6. Insufficient exposure to normal pool depth

This is why early correction and structured progression are critical.

How AQZOG Swim School Prepares Students for Stage 3

1. Strong Fundamentals First

We do not rush distance. We ensure:

  • Breathing control
  • Body alignment

2. Survival Skills Integration

Unlike many schools, AQZOG integrates:

  • Survival backstroke
  • Floating recovery
  • Energy conservation skills
throughout training, not just before the test.

3. Normal Pool Exposure

Training is conducted in standard ActiveSG pools, helping students adapt naturally to:

  • Pool depth
  • Lane environment
  • Assessment conditions

This reduces fear and increases confidence.

4. Progressive Distance Training

Instead of sudden jumps in distance, we use:

  • Incremental progression
  • Technique checkpoints
  • Confidence reinforcement

5. Assessment-Focused Coaching

Students are trained exactly to assessment criteria, not assumptions. Parents are informed clearly about:

  • Readiness level
  • Weak areas
  • Expected timelines
