Check the air first

Singapore PSI and haze conditions, made practical for swimming. This AQZOG guide brings together the latest regional 24-hour PSI and 1-hour PM2.5 readings with a plain-English outdoor swimming advisory. The readings below refresh on the same post approximately every hour. Always check the displayed NEA measurement time before making a decision.

For coaches: Check the pool’s actual location, NEA updates and ActiveSG/operator notices before class. Pause activity if a swimmer has symptoms, and contact parents about any class change. For parents and students: Tell your coach about asthma, heart or lung conditions, or discomfort; follow individual medical advice.

These are AQZOG planning suggestions, not an official closure decision. The 24-hour PSI describes longer-term air quality; 1-hour PM2.5 helps with activity in the next hour. Swimming does not prevent inhalation of haze. NEA haze guidance · myENV · PSI data.

How to use this guide for swim lessons

👩‍🏫 Coaches

Check the region and latest reading before class, then look again if the haze changes. Scale back vigorous laps and repeated breath-control drills when air quality worsens. Watch swimmers for coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or unusual fatigue. Follow the venue operator’s instructions and inform families promptly about any lesson change.

👨‍👩‍👧 Parents

Check your child’s lesson location and ask the coach if the session is proceeding. Tell the coach about asthma or other heart or lung conditions. If your child feels unwell, let them rest and follow medical advice. A lesson plan can change even when a pool remains open.

🧒 Students

Tell your coach immediately if you cough, feel short of breath or feel dizzy. Take breaks as directed. Do not push through a hard workout simply because the class has started.

PSI versus PM2.5: which reading matters now?

24-hour PSI is a rolling measure of overall air quality, reported for North, South, East, West and Central Singapore. It is useful for the broader haze outlook. 1-hour PM2.5 responds faster to short-term changes and is especially useful when deciding on outdoor activity in the next hour. The two numbers have different units and should never be converted directly into one another. The PM2.5 figures here are concentrations in micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³), not PSI points.

NEA describes 24-hour PSI of 0–50 as Good, 51–100 as Moderate, 101–200 as Unhealthy, 201–300 as Very Unhealthy, and above 300 as Hazardous. Its 1-hour PM2.5 bands are 0–55 Normal, 56–150 Elevated, 151–250 High and 251 or above Very High. When the 1-hour band is Elevated, NEA advises reducing strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour. For severe conditions, consult the latest official advisory.

Frequently asked questions

Does swimming in water protect me from haze?

No. At an outdoor pool, you still breathe the surrounding air. Vigorous swimming increases breathing, so consider the current air quality and the swimmer’s health before training.

Will AQZOG automatically cancel a lesson at a particular PSI?

These readings do not automatically announce a cancellation. Your coach considers NEA guidance, the 1-hour PM2.5 trend, the swimmer’s needs, weather and the pool operator’s notices. Contact your coach for the actual class status.

How often is this page updated?

The regional table and advisory refresh approximately hourly on this same page. The time shown above the table is the official measurement time; if it appears old, use NEA’s haze site or the myENV app for a fresh check.
