Year-End 2026 SwimSafer Holiday Program @ Queenstown
Year-End SwimSafer Holiday Program @ Queenstown
Is your child struggling with certain SwimSafer skills, such as survival strokes, underwater swimming, entries, rescue techniques or stroke coordination?
The AQZOG Year-End SwimSafer Holiday Program at Queenstown Swimming Complex is designed to help participants strengthen their weaker SwimSafer components through six focused training sessions.
The programme will be conducted on:
23, 25, 27 and 30 November, and 2 and 4 December
It is suitable for participants working towards SwimSafer Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5 (Silver) or Stage 6 (Gold).
Instead of repeatedly practising only the skills they can already perform, participants will work on the components that require the most improvement. Join AQZOG and start fixing those weak SwimSafer components today!
Focused Training Based on Each Participant’s Ability
Every participant progresses differently. One child may be a confident swimmer but struggle with survival skills. Another may understand the correct technique but lack the endurance to complete the required distance. Some participants may have difficulty with underwater skills, somersaults, entries or stroke coordination.
This is why the AQZOG holiday programme does not follow a one-size-fits-all approach.
Participants will be divided into two ability-based groups. Within each group, they may also be assigned different tasks according to their individual ability, current SwimSafer stage and areas requiring improvement.
This allows the coach to provide more purposeful training while ensuring that every participant is challenged at an appropriate level.
Skills Assessment at the Start of the Programme
A skills assessment will be conducted at the beginning of the holiday programme.
The assessment allows the coach to observe each participant’s:
- Current swimming ability
- Stroke efficiency and coordination
- Water confidence
- Survival skills
- Underwater skills
- Endurance
- Understanding of SwimSafer requirements
- Components that require further correction
Based on this assessment, suitable training tasks will be assigned throughout the programme.
The purpose is not to compare one participant with another. It is to identify what each swimmer needs to practise so that the available training time can be used more effectively.
Who Should Join This Holiday Programme?
The programme is suitable for participants who are currently learning or preparing for:
- SwimSafer Stage 3
- SwimSafer Stage 4
- SwimSafer Stage 5 (Silver)
- SwimSafer Stage 6 (Gold)
It may be especially helpful for participants who:
- Have difficulty completing particular SwimSafer components
- Recently did not pass one or more assessment components
- Need more practice before their next assessment
- Have not trained consistently
- Lack confidence in deep water
- Need to improve their stroke technique or endurance
- Struggle with underwater or survival skills
- Want structured practice during the year-end school holidays
Participants do not need to have exactly the same ability. Training tasks will be adjusted according to what each swimmer can currently perform.
Why Holiday Training Can Be Effective
During regular weekly lessons, time must often be shared among different swimming and survival skills. A focused holiday programme provides additional opportunities for participants to repeat difficult components over a shorter and more consistent period.
The six-session format allows the coach to introduce corrections, observe the participant’s response and reinforce the improved technique during the following sessions.
This concentrated practice can help participants:
- Understand the requirements of difficult components
- Correct ineffective habits
- Improve body position and coordination
- Develop greater swimming endurance
- Build confidence through repeated practice
- Become more comfortable with survival and underwater tasks
- Prepare more effectively for future SwimSafer training or assessment
Progress will still depend on the participant’s starting ability, attendance, effort and response to coaching. However, regular and purposeful practice can provide a valuable opportunity for improvement.
Train at Queenstown Swimming Complex
The programme will be conducted at Queenstown Swimming Complex, a convenient location for families living around Queenstown and nearby areas.
The pool environment gives participants the opportunity to practise their SwimSafer skills under the guidance of AQZOG’s coaching team.
Parents who are unsure whether the programme is suitable for their child may contact AQZOG and provide the child’s current stage, swimming background and areas of difficulty. This information will help us advise whether the programme matches the participant’s needs.
Secure a Place Early
Places are limited so that training can remain organised and participants can receive appropriate tasks based on their abilities.
Early registration also gives families time to plan around the six programme dates. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions, as each lesson supports the development and reinforcement of the skills covered during the programme.
Do not wait until the next assessment to discover that the same difficult components still require more practice.
Use the year-end holidays to help your child retrain, relearn and improve with AQZOG.

The programme is intended for participants working at Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5 (Silver) and Stage 6 (Gold).
4. Is this a beginner learn-to-swim programme?
No. This programme focuses on participants from Stage 3 to Stage 6. Children who are unable to swim independently or are still developing basic water confidence may require a beginner programme instead.
5. How will participants be grouped?
Participants will be organised into two ability-based groups. The grouping will consider their current ability, SwimSafer level and training needs.
6. Will everyone in the same group perform identical tasks?
Not necessarily. Participants may receive different tasks based on their abilities and weaker components. This helps make the training more relevant to each swimmer.
7. How will the coach know which components need improvement?
A skills assessment will be provided at the start of the programme. The coach will observe each participant and identify the areas that require greater attention.

Yes. The programme may be useful for participants who need to improve components they were previously unable to complete. Parents should inform AQZOG which stage and components were unsuccessful.

Attendance at all six sessions is strongly encouraged. Consistent participation allows the coach to introduce corrections, reinforce the skills and monitor improvement across the programme.
