Swimming Lesson Plan- Beginner Freestyle

Objective:

After the lesson, students should be able to perform proper body position, basic freestyle kicking and arm novement with a focus on breathing technique as well.


Warm-Up (5 minutes):

  1. Introduction and Safety Briefing (2 minutes)
    • Greet students and introduce yourself.
    • Explain the importance of pool safety rules.
    • Briefly outline the lesson plan.
  2. Water Acclimatization (3 minutes)
    • Have students enter the pool and walk in the shallow end.
    • Practice blowing bubbles in the water to get comfortable with submerging their faces.
    • Perform simple arm circles in the water to loosen up.

Main Lesson (35 minutes):

  1. Body Position and Floating (5 minutes)
    • Explanation and Demonstration (2 minutes):
      • Explain the importance of a horizontal body position and being able to stand up after floating.
      • Demonstrate floating on the front and back and able to stand up after floating.
    • Practice (3 minutes):
      • Assist students in achieving a horizontal float on their front and back.
      • Encourage them to relax and feel the water support.
  2. Kicking Technique (10 minutes)
    • Explanation and Demonstration (2 minutes):
      • Explain the basic flutter kick technique: straight legs, loose ankles, small and quick movements. Making splashes in the water.
      • Demonstrate the flutter kick while holding onto the pool wall or using a kickboard.
    • Practice (8 minutes):
      • Students to practice kicking with a kickboard or holding the pool wall whichever they deem fit.
      • Provide individual feedback and corrections as they go along to ensure understanding of the process.
  3. Arm Movements (10 minutes)
    • Explanation and Demonstration (3 minutes):
      • Explain the basic arm movement for freestyle: hand entry, pull, and recovery.
      • Demonstrate the full arm stroke on land and in the water
    • Practice (7 minutes):
      • Have students practice arm movements while standing out or in shallow water.
      • Practice arm movements combined with kicking using a kickboard.
  4. Breathing Technique (10 minutes)
    • Explanation and Demonstration (3 minutes):
      • Explain the importance of rhythmic breathing in freestyle.
      • Demonstrate breathing to the side while performing the arm stroke.
    • Practice (7 minutes):
      • Practice side breathing while standing in shallow water.
      • Combine breathing with arm movements and kicking while using a kickboard.

Cool Down (5 minutes):

  1. Relaxed Floating and Gentle Kicking (3 minutes)
    • Have students float on their backs and perform gentle kicks to relax.
  2. Q&A and Review (2 minutes)
    • Review the key points of the lesson: body position, kicking, arm movements, and breathing.
    • Answer any questions and provide encouragement for practice.
